Sunshine vitamins raining down on Amsterdam

Yesterday and the day before the entire city turned into a sunflower. All faces, old and young, black, white and brown where angled towards the sun and following its path, just like sunflowers do. As I strolled through the city I passed people cleaning boats, fixing bikes outside on the pavement and painting their houseboats. Every bench was occupied by at least one happy sunflower, eyes closed while charging his or her battery with precious sunshine vitamins, otherwise known as vitamin D.

Being sufficient in Vitamin D, along with diet and exercise, has emerged as one of the most important ingredients to staying healthy and great looking. As sunshinevitamin.org describes:
“Sunlight is the best and only natural source of vitamin D. Unlike dietary or supplementary vitamin D, when you get your ‘D’ from sunshine your body takes what it needs, and de-metabolizes any extra. That’s critical – as vitamin D experts and many health groups now advocate 1,000 to 2,000 IU of vitamin D daily – five to ten times the old recommendations. Because too much ‘D’ from dietary supplements may cause the body to over-process calcium, nobody really knows for sure how much supplementary vitamin D is safe. On the other hand, sunlight-induced vitamin D doesn’t have that problem – it’s the way your body is intended to make it!”

So…. pull off your clothing and get that gorgious naked body out there in the sunshine synthesizing some vitamin D. Health can be so easy at times, let’s not forget that!

  1. Dad

Hopefully this was the first of a lot more of sun!! Thank’s for the nice story.

    • Yes it will be a summer full of sun, with a refreshing breeze and a few fluffy clouds, to decorate the intensely blue sky.
Sometimes it will rain, which will be such a nice change and the plants will love it too. That’s how I visualize this summer.
